Title of lecture: “Live Video Interaction  as Emerging Media – Opportunities and Challenges”

We have invented and investigated a new hybrid media that combines emergent mobile technologies for live video streaming with advances in varipus technologies such as computer supported collaboration, internet of things and computer vision. Video traffic has quickly become the bulk of data communication on the Internet. This medium is now moving beyond consumption of TV and block buster movies, becoming integrated with other interactive services and social media. A new type of social media, displaying live broadcasts from mobile devices, has lately become increasingly popular  through services such as Meerkat and Periscope.

Mobile video broadcasting is part of this trend, although applications differ from earlier webcam technologies in that the cameras are wireless, which enables capturing content from anywhere within the reach of a mobile network, and extended physical control of the device for doing camerawork. There are many opportunities and challenges in making this media useful not least concerning questions regarding appropriate content and “format”. In our reserach, we have addressed how to support professional multicamera broadcasts, live ambient media as home decoration, and lately interactive realtime video streaming of events such as fashion runways.
